Fruits of the season

Friday evening was a wonderfully sunny affair, and a hike up to Rivington Pike took us through magical woodlands such as this. We spent a merry hour picking blueberries up there too. The blue stained fingers were worth it.

I'm back home after a few days in sunny Sussex by the sea, and inland. I've at least one more summer blast to come, with the Number Six Festival from 1 September in Portmeirion.

Cool character

One of the coolest characters I spotted this week was the cyclist who put up his hammock in All Saints Park on a sunny lunchtime.

Victorian pianist #lovemcv

As someone who walks through Victoria station most days, it’s been a mixed blessing to see and hear the recently installed piano. The idea is great, London St Pancras did it years ago, but yesterday’s warbling by a young man of a Celine Dion classic was too much for me…

However, this smartly attired gent was at the old Joanna* at the weekend and playing a more palatable selection of music. I noticed afterwards that his companion was checking the time – hopefully as she was wary that he might get carried away and they’d miss their train, rather than because she wasn’t enjoying his performance.

* cockney rhyming slang for piano. Talking of which I'm off to London this afternoon for work, and will next be blogging here on Friday, so TTFN (ta-ta for now).

#Peterloo remembered, 198 years on #tapestry

This year there are two events to commemorate the 1819 Peterloo massacre. On Sunday there was the usual marching in from all local regions into Peter's Field, just as the 60,000 to  100,000 did all those years ago. Then there were readings of the names of the dead who were killed by the yeomanry.

This was followed by a tapestry making event at the Friends Meeting House, see photos. The finished tapestry is on show today at 1pm, on Windmill St outside Manchester Central, followed by a procession to the steps of the town hall in Albert Square.

Monday Mural @_makersmarket #CityDailyPhoto

My contribution to  the Monday Mural this week was taken yesterday at the marvellous Makers’ Market on its monthly stop at Stevenson Square. In amongst all of the great food on sale and other clever creativity - from clothes and potted plants to jewellery and upcycled items - artist Kelzo and friends were armed with spray cans, showcasing their work and selling reasonably priced artwork too.

Weekend Reflection: Progress

Yesterday on Greengate Square, aka The Embankment, just over the Manchester city centre border and into Salford. Progress building-wise from last summer here. I'm back from a lovely week with family in Tywyn, west Wales, so Mancunian Wave  will be back to its daily posts again, for a week or so before my next jaunt. Happy Weekend Reflections

#ThroughNo3 reflections in Spinninngfields

It must be a year since Liz West's Through No.3 was installed at Spinningfields so it's high time I featured it on the blog. Even on a dull day it transforms life through its rainbow hued panes. On a sunny day it shimmers in all directions. I'm off over the hills to west Wales and will be on Instagram rather than this blog for a week or so..

An early photo for Weekend Reflections.

50 years on and #memoriesof66

The 1966 World Cup tournament is being celebrated at the National Football Museum in Manchester. It's not just football, there's some fascinating social history there too (in a light touch kind of way) including this 1960s' living room. Best of all some lovely pennants from  South American radio stations. I'll have to alert this to my colleagues attending next month's EDXC conference in Manchester which is all about radio broadcasting.

#Spinningfields makes you fly?

For a long time, I've been wanting to capture one of the floating figures near Neighbourhood in Spinningfields and finally I snapped one on Sunday!

#CityDailyPhoto theme day "My City’s Skyline"

City Daily Photo’s theme day for August is My City’s Skyline. I was hoping to find a good overview but instead offer you this view of Deansgate, taken from a tram yesterday afternoon. There are many good skyline shots of Manchester online should you wish to check them out.
